Frequently asked questions
Why does my actual train take longer than the estimate?
Indian trains often run at lower average speeds due to track conditions, slow zones, signal holds, and scheduled halts. This calculator uses typical commercial speeds. The actual scheduled time listed on IRCTC is always more reliable for trip planning.
What is Vande Bharat's actual average speed?
Vande Bharat trains are capable of 160 km/h but the network average (including stops and slow zones) tends to be 80–110 km/h in practice. The 160 km/h figure here is an optimistic best-case; use 110 km/h for a more realistic estimate on most routes.
How many stops does an Indian train make?
This varies widely. Rajdhani trains on a 1,500 km route may stop only 4–6 times. Passenger trains on the same distance can stop at 40+ stations. The estimate in this calculator is approximate.
Where can I check the exact schedule?
Visit erail.in or the IRCTC website to see the timetable, intermediate stations, and live running status for any specific train by number or name.
Is the Vande Bharat faster than a flight?
For city-pair distances under 400–500 km (e.g. Delhi–Agra, Ahmedabad–Mumbai), Vande Bharat can be competitive with flying when you factor in check-in time, airport transfers, and boarding. For longer distances, flights are typically much faster door-to-door.
