Frequently asked questions

How do I convert 75% to CGPA on a 10-point scale?

Using the standard formula: 75 ÷ 9.5 = 7.89 CGPA. Using the Anna University formula: (75 ÷ 10) + 0.75 = 8.25 CGPA. The two formulas give different results, so always use the one specified by your university.

What CGPA is equivalent to first class distinction?

First class with distinction typically requires 75% or above, which is approximately 7.89 CGPA on a 10-point scale (using ÷9.5 formula). Some universities define distinction at 70%, which would be 7.37 CGPA.

Can I use any formula for visa or foreign university applications?

For foreign university applications, use WES (World Education Services) or your university's official conversion. For US universities, 4-point scale is standard. For UK universities, percentage is often preferred. Always attach your official transcript alongside the converted CGPA.

Is 60% equal to 6.32 CGPA?

Yes, on a 10-point scale: 60 ÷ 9.5 = 6.32 CGPA. This is the minimum first-class threshold in many Indian universities. Using the Anna University formula it would be (60 ÷ 10) + 0.75 = 6.75 CGPA.

What if my percentage is above 95%? Will CGPA exceed 10?

On the standard ÷9.5 formula, 95.5% would give exactly 10.05 CGPA which is theoretically impossible. In practice, grades are capped at 10.0. If you get a result above the scale maximum, your CGPA is considered the maximum (10.0, 7.0, or 4.0 depending on scale).
