Frequently asked questions
How is overall percentage calculated from multiple subjects?
Overall percentage = (Sum of all marks obtained) ÷ (Sum of all total marks) × 100. This is a simple aggregate, not an average of individual subject percentages. For example, if you scored 340 out of 500 across 5 subjects, your percentage is 340÷500×100 = 68%.
What is the passing percentage in India?
For CBSE, the minimum passing marks is 33% per subject and overall. For most state boards, it is 35% per subject. For university exams, it is typically 40% per subject and 50% overall for passing with first class. Check your board or university's official rules.
What is an O grade?
O (Outstanding) grade is awarded for 90% and above in the UGC-mandated 10-point grading system adopted by most Indian universities post-2011. It corresponds to a grade point of 10. Some universities use A+ for this range instead of O.
Can a student pass overall but fail a subject?
Generally no. Most universities require a minimum passing mark in each subject individually, regardless of overall percentage. Failing even one subject typically results in a compartment or supplementary exam requirement.
How do I calculate percentage if subjects have different maximum marks?
Add all marks obtained across subjects and divide by the sum of all maximum marks, then multiply by 100. For example: 85/100 + 72/75 + 45/50 → obtained = 202, total = 225 → 202/225 × 100 = 89.8%.
