Trip Cost Splitter
Add friends and expenses, then see exactly who owes whom and how much to settle fairly with minimum transactions.
Frequently asked questions
How are settlements calculated?
The tool calculates the net balance for each person (total paid minus their fair share). Those with a positive balance are owed money; those with a negative balance owe money. The greedy algorithm then matches the largest debtor with the largest creditor, reducing the number of transactions to settle all debts.
What does "split between" mean?
You can split an expense unevenly — for example, a hotel room split between only 2 of a group of 5. Check only the people who should share that particular expense. By default all members are checked.
Is the data saved anywhere?
No. All data is stored in the browser's memory for this session only. When you close or refresh the tab, the data is cleared. This is intentional — no account needed, no data sent to any server.
Can I handle unequal splits (e.g. one person pays more)?
This tool does equal splits between selected members. For unequal splits (percentage-based or custom amounts), add individual expenses per person as separate line items paid by the relevant person.
What is the maximum group size?
There is no hard limit, but groups of 3–15 people work best. Very large groups should use a dedicated app like Splitwise or Settle Up for better tracking over multiple days.
