Water Bill Calculator
Estimate your monthly water bill for major Indian cities with slab-wise tariff and sewerage charge breakdown.
Tariffs are approximate for 2024–25 domestic connections. Commercial rates are typically 1.5–3× domestic. Actual bills may include service charges, arrears, or local levies.
Average water usage in India
The average Indian urban household uses 135–200 litres per person per day (LPCD). That is 4–6 KL per person per month, or 16–24 KL for a family of 4. Rural areas average 55–70 LPCD.
A dripping tap wastes 15–20 litres per day. A leaking toilet can waste 200+ litres per day. Fixing leaks is the single biggest water-saving measure.
Water from washing vegetables or rinsing dishes can be reused to water plants. Collecting AC condensate water is also an effective practice.
Many cities including Bangalore and Chennai mandate rainwater harvesting for buildings above a certain size. It can reduce dependency on municipal water by 20–40%.
Frequently asked questions
What is a kilolitre (KL) of water?
1 KL = 1,000 litres. An average Indian family of 4 uses 6–12 KL per month. A single person in a metro apartment may use 3–6 KL per month. For reference: one bath uses about 150L, one shower 60L, one flush 6–10L, and hand-washing 2–3L.
What is the sewerage charge?
Most cities charge a sewerage or drainage fee as a percentage of the water bill — typically 25–60%. This covers the cost of treating wastewater before releasing it. Delhi's sewerage charge is 60% of water charges, Mumbai's is 50%.
Why does Delhi offer free water up to 6 KL?
Delhi's free water scheme (20 KL/month for registered domestic connections) was introduced in 2015 as a welfare measure. The subsidy is funded by higher charges on commercial consumers and above-limit domestic users.
How can I read my water meter?
Most domestic meters in India are drum-type or dial-type meters. The reading is in kilolitres (KL) or cubic metres (1 m³ = 1 KL). Take a reading at the start and end of the month; the difference is your consumption for that period.
Are tanker water costs included?
No. This calculator covers municipal piped water tariffs. Private tanker costs vary widely — in Bangalore, tankers charge ₹700–1,500 per trip (about 5–6 KL), making it 4–10× more expensive than piped municipal water.
