How discount calculations work

Three common scenarios when shopping — this calculator handles all of them.

Sale Price from Discount
Savings = Original × (Discount% ÷ 100)
Sale Price = Original − Savings
Example: ₹1,000 at 20% off → savings ₹200 → sale price ₹800
Find Discount %
Discount% = (Original − Sale) ÷ Original × 100
Example: ₹1,000 marked down to ₹750 → discount = 25%
Find Original Price
Original = Sale Price ÷ (1 − Discount%/100)
Example: Sale price ₹800 at 20% off → original = ₹1,000

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate 20% off a price?

Multiply the original price by 0.20 to get the discount amount, then subtract it from the original. For example, 20% off ₹1,500 = ₹300 discount, so you pay ₹1,200. Or simply multiply by 0.80 (i.e., 1 − 0.20).

What is the difference between discount and discount percentage?

Discount is the absolute amount saved in rupees. Discount percentage is the savings expressed as a proportion of the original price. A ₹200 discount on a ₹1,000 item is a 20% discount.

How do I find the original price if I only know the sale price and discount?

Divide the sale price by (1 − discount%/100). If something costs ₹600 after a 25% discount, the original price was ₹600 ÷ 0.75 = ₹800.

Are the quick discount buttons (5%–50%) Indian-standard discounts?

Yes, these cover the most common retail discount tiers in India — from small sale discounts (5–10%) to clearance sale discounts (40–50%). Online platforms like Flipkart and Amazon India frequently use these values.

Does this calculator handle GST on discounts?

No, this calculator works with pre-tax or post-tax prices as you enter them. If a product is discounted and then GST is applied, enter the post-discount price in the GST calculator separately. The MRP on Indian products is always GST-inclusive.
