Do home-based food businesses need FSSAI registration?

Yes. Any food business, including home kitchens selling food (cloud kitchens, home bakers, tiffin services), must obtain FSSAI registration or license. Registration (₹100/year) applies if turnover is below ₹12 lakh.

What is the penalty for operating without FSSAI license?

Operating without a valid FSSAI license or registration can result in a fine up to ₹5 lakh and/or imprisonment up to 6 months under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

Do importers and exporters need Central License?

Yes. Any business importing or exporting food products requires a Central FSSAI License, regardless of turnover. The license is obtained from FSSAI Head Office in New Delhi.

Is FSSAI license required for online food delivery (Swiggy/Zomato)?

Yes. Restaurants and cloud kitchens listed on food delivery platforms must have a valid FSSAI license or registration. Platforms may also require FSSAI registration proof at the time of onboarding.

How long does FSSAI registration/license take?

FSSAI Registration (Basic): 7–30 days. State License: 30–60 days. Central License: 30–90 days. Apply via the FoSCoS portal (foscos.fssai.gov.in) for faster processing.
